What is the Air Traffic Controller Job Process?

Currently my boyfriend is going to CCBC to become an air traffic controller. He should graduate in the spring of 2010. I know that when he graduates he will have to go to Oklahoma City, but when? Also- when does he apply for jobs and how does that work? We are from Pittsburgh and would like to stay somewhere around the area, so how difficult will that be? And finally when he starts his job how much will he be making? I've heard anywhere from 17,000 to 50,000 a year. Can anyone explain this to me? ThanksWhat is the Air Traffic Controller Job Process?
To become an Air Traffic Controller, you need to take one of three approaches.

First, you could join the military and be a controller for them.

Second, you can go to an FAA approved CTI school. The list of CTI schools is located at http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/head鈥?/a>

Third, you can apply for a general public announcement with the FAA (this is by far the easiest route to take). Go to http://jobs.faa.gov/Allfaajobs.htm and at the very bottom of that page, do a search for jobs that are open to non-federal employees, with a title containing the words air traffic. A list of all current vacancies will pop up. You will want to look for jobs that do not require any previous air traffic control experience (these jobs usually have the word ';trainee'; in the title). Once you find one of these jobs, apply for it.

Will be required to attend the FAA academy for about 3 months in Oklahoma City, OK. Once you successfully complete the academy, you will be given only a day or two to report to your facility for work, so it helps if you can have family or friends coordinate moving while you are still in training.

Tips %26amp; Warnings

*

Be sure you meet the minimum requirements! They will throw out your application in a heartbeat if you don't.

*

Don't get worried if you don't hear anything right away at any time...it can take several months between each step.

*

It never hurts to call or visit the facility you want to work in.

*

Print out each job announcement you apply for. There is a contact person listed that you can call for more information, as well as very important information that you may forget.

*

If you ever miss a step or fail a step in the hiring process, you have to start all over from the beginning (apply for an announcement). Then you will have to wait until everyone from that announcement catches up to the step you last completed before you can move on with the hiring process.

*

If you fail the AT-SAT test, you have to wait 12 months to take it again.

*

Robinson Aviation doesn't know much about what is happening at the FAA. They only do the AT-SAT testing.
