Does a servo motor need programing to use it without a timer(just a controller)?

I want to attach a tiny bb gun to a remote control car i got to be funny. Im thinking of using a servo motor to pull the trigger, but i have one question. If I use a servo motor will i need computer software or anything other than a compatable controller to make the motor work? If I do, do you know another way to make the thing shoot?Does a servo motor need programing to use it without a timer(just a controller)?
As an alternative to using a motor, have you considered

using an electromagnetic solenoid. Power the coil and

magnetically operate the trigger mechanism!

Each time a short ON - OFF pulse occurs, a shot is fired.Does a servo motor need programing to use it without a timer(just a controller)?
yes. you need a servo controller to make the motor work as you intend.

if you just connect + and - current to a servo motor, it will just sort of lock up and not spin, you'll feel resistance if you try to spin the shaft. the controller basically sends pulses to the servo motor which controls it.

as for helping you create a Weapon of Minimal Destruction... you are on your own there!
Depending on what servo you use. Hobby servo motors are not real servos and require a controller. Real servo motors are dc or ac motors with a feedback scale.

If you apply power to this type of servo without using a controller it will work like any other ac/dc motor.

On the other hand some cheaper hobby servo motors are just dc motors with gear boxes.

In other words the answer is maybe :)
